The Comets tag team bounced back with a great performance at the sun soaked Evesham tag rugby festival today, winning two and losing two in the pool phases and demolishing Kenilworth 8 – 4 in the runners up final.
They could have been in the final instead of Yardley ‘A’, who were on equal points with the Comets and who went through to the final on tries scored. Comets started off in style beating Evesham 6 - 4 before losing to Yardley 6 - 4 in the next pool game. They then went to sleep a bit and Evesham won the third pool game 5- 3.
The Comets stepped up three gears for the next pool game against Yardley ‘A’, winning comfortably 5 – 4 with a fantastic performance and which saw Yardley score a try which should have been disallowed as they had exceeded 6 tags ! (Must have been the heat getting to the ref’s head !).
The McLucas sisters had a great day with five tries each, and Izzy Lambert, Alex Vallance bagged four. Two tries apiece also came from Laura Hughes (who played on despite a painful ankle), Rhiannon Cory, Claire Newman and Beki Vallance. Girl of the match was Amy Belfield, whose regular runs and line breaks set up many tries and who went redder than anyone in the heat !!.
Bring on Old Coventrians next week !! |

COMETS MAKE IT THREE IN A
ROW
The Comets girls tag rugby
team achieved a third well deserved festival victory on Sunday 15
October with a sparkling display of (non alcoholic) champagne rugby at a
Halloween-themed festival hosted by Bournville RFC. The Comets beat
local rivals Yardley and District 8 – 7 with a golden try in extra time
in the closely fought final of the third festival of the 06/07 season.
This result sees the Comets
firmly at the top of the West Midlands tag league festival with a
maximum possible 15 points.
The Comets comfortably won
three out of three of their pool fixtures, beating old foes Yardley B
7-2, Nuneaton 7-1 and Old Coventrians 5-0.
The incredibly fast Becky
Leng was again the team’s top try scorer with an excellent series of
individual and teamwork tries, amassing 12. Beki Vallance atoned for her
duck at the last festival with six tries followed by Captain Sarah
McLucas with four tries. Girl of the match Alex Vallance and stealthy
Laura McLucas grabbed a pair of tries apiece and the ultimate team
player Izzy Lambert scored a wonderfully worked team try. Sarah McLucas
collected the winners’ festival trophy on behalf of the team. |
